Child–Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT)
Child–Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) is a 10-session, play-based program that helps parents and caregivers strengthen their relationship with their child through play.
Designed for parents of young children experiencing emotional, behavioural, social or attachment difficulties, CPRT teaches practical skills to help parents better understand their child’s needs, respond to challenging behaviours and build a stronger, more secure connection.
How does CPRT work?
The program combines weekly parent-only Zoom sessions with special play sessions that parents conduct with their child at home.
During the weekly Zoom sessions, parents learn and practise new skills, receive guidance and feedback, and reflect on their experiences. Parents also record their play sessions to help develop their skills and confidence over the course of the program.
What will parents learn?
Throughout the program, parents develop practical skills in:
Reflective responding: Helping children feel heard and understood.
Limit setting: Setting clear, supportive boundaries.
Choice giving: Encouraging independence and cooperation.
Esteem building: Nurturing children’s confidence and self-worth.
Encouragement: Supporting children’s efforts, strengths and growth.
As parents practise these skills each week, they build confidence in responding to their child’s emotional and behavioural needs, strengthening their relationship and creating more positive interactions at home.
